Why a tile roof does not protect the gutter
Tile sheds water well, but it does not stop debris. Palm fronds, leaves, seed pods and the dirt that settles on a roof all end up where the roof ends, and that is the gutter. If your Naples home has gutters, they catch all of it.
The wet season makes it worse. South Florida gets about 70 percent of its rain between mid-May and mid-October, so a gutter that is already full has months of heavy rain to deal with.
What a clogged gutter does
Water that cannot drain runs over the edge. Over time that can stain the walls, wash out soil at the foundation and leave streaks on the gutter face. Those streaks are what brightening is for.
- Water spilling over the edge during a storm
- Streaks on the front of the gutter and fascia
- Standing water and debris that stays wet
Why not do it yourself
You have two options, a ladder or the roof. Eagle Roofing says walking on a roof can be difficult and dangerous,.
The CDC reported about 34,000 work-related ladder fall injuries treated in US emergency departments in 2011, with 113 deaths. Those are workers, not homeowners, but it shows ladders are not harmless.
